How to Repair DualSense Controller Drift on PS5

Have you ever been on your final lap in Gran Turismo® 7 and had your car stray off the circuit for no apparent reason? Have you ever had your SifuTM fighter mysteriously slip to the side of the screen at the worst possible time? If so, you’ve probably encountered an irritating, game-ending glitch known as PS5 controller stick drift.

Don’t worry, we can assist you to get your PlayStation® 5 controller working again.

How to Determine Whether Your DualSense Controller Has Stick Drift

The PS5 DualSense® controller has buttons and two analog sticks for playing your favorite games. However, if you’re playing and your characters’ movements don’t match what you’re doing on the joystick, you may be experiencing controller drift.

How to Repair PS5 Controller Stick Drift

PS5 DualSense controllers, like other joysticks, lose efficiency with time. Physical damage, ordinary wear and tear from continuous usage, dirt buildup, and out-of-date software are the most typical causes of PS5 controller drifting.

In any case, we’ll teach you how to get your controller up and running again.

1. CHANGE THE INPUT THRESHOLD

Your input threshold is the area where your controller detects no movement. If your joystick has a lot of drift, lowering the input threshold in the game you’re playing can assist. Go to the settings menu of the game you’re playing to do so. The input threshold on your PS5 console cannot be changed.

2. RESET YOUR PLAYSTATION 5 DUALSENSE CONTROLLER

The first step will be the simplest: reset the controller. This disconnects the device from the console, forcing it to reconnect, perhaps eliminating controller drift. Here’s how it’s done:

Switch off the PS5 system.

Press and hold the Reset button within the little hole on the back of the PS5 controller for 5 seconds with a straightened paperclip.

After the DualSense controller has been completely disconnected, restart the console.

3. CLEAN THE PS5 DUALSENSE CONTROLLER ANALOG STICK

A clean wipe-down of the analog stick can also help. Clean the joint that connects to the controller as well as the pad itself with a gentle, dry cloth. Cleaning solutions and alcohol should be avoided since they can harm the interior of the controller.

4. VERIFY THAT YOUR SOFTWARE IS UP TO DATE

When you’re a few rounds into Call of Duty®, the status of your controller’s software is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. However, it is something to consider if you are suffering PS5 DualSense drift.

Connect the controller to the system via a USB cord, then push the PS button (the PlayStation logo) and select Accessories. It should say “Up to date” under the Wireless Controller Device Software tab. When connected to the internet, your console should automatically update that program. If an update is available, you can start it manually from this screen.

Outdated PS5 console software might also cause drift. Go to the Home screen and select Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to verify and update it. You may upgrade the system software via Wi-Fi or USB in the Update System Software tab.

5. DISABLE YOUR PS5 CONTROLLER BLUETOOTH, THEN RE-ENABLE IT.

When you disconnect your controller from your console’s Bluetooth® devices, the controller forgets about it and then recognizes it when you sync it again. This can sometimes eliminate controller drift.

To unplug your controller:

Select Accessories by pressing the PS button. Locate Bluetooth Accessories from the General menu, then click the controller and select Delete > Ok.

To re-connect your controller:

To enter Sync Mode on the unconnected controller, press the PS button and the Share button simultaneously. Log in by selecting Yes.
